Poptime

Herein, I collect and count down my favorite pop, rock, r&b and hip hop singles released between the time I was born (1/74) and right this minute. Ordering is pretty loose and arbitrary until I reach the top 10 or so, when rankings will really mean something.

I'm limiting myself to things that have actually charted in the Billboard Hot 100 (or Billboard subcharts or foreign equivalents when applicable). Otherwise, trying to narrow a list down to 101 songs would be border on impossible.

  1. Artist: Robert Plant
    Song: In the Mood
    Year: 1983
Highest Chart Position: #39 (Billboard Hot 100)

“In the Mood”, together with “Big Log”, made Robert Plant’s second solo album The Prinicipal of Moments the one that really solidified his post-Zeppelin career. “In the Mood” in particular works in odd ways. It’s dirgey, but bright and shining. That repetitive three-chord guitar strum pushes the song along for its full five minutes, and when Plant sings “I’m in the mood for a melody / I’m in the mood for a melody / I’m in the moo-oo-ood”, he never actually delivers a strong one himself.

There are so many counterproductive elements within the song’s make up, yet it works and works well in spite of them all.
