Poptime

Herein, I collect and count down my favorite pop, rock, r&b and hip hop singles released between the time I was born (1/74) and right this minute. Ordering is pretty loose and arbitrary until I reach the top 10 or so, when rankings will really mean something.

I'm limiting myself to things that have actually charted in the Billboard Hot 100 (or Billboard subcharts or foreign equivalents when applicable). Otherwise, trying to narrow a list down to 101 songs would be border on impossible.

  1. Artist: Inspiral Carpets
    Song: Two Worlds Collide
    Year: 1992
Highest Chart Position: #32 (UK Singles Chart)

“Two Worlds Collide” came at exactly the moment in time when UK music was making the shift between focusing on the baggy-style “Madchester” bands and the more metropolitan sound of bands like Suede and Blur.  Before this single, Inspiral Carpets were known best for their trippy organ-heavy rave ups and wild psychedelic imagery.  “Two Worlds Collide” was the sound of a band growing up and finding themselves able to write something with more substance, something anthemic.

This song is every bit as important as any of the early “Britpop” singles, but sadly gets overlooked because it was by a band nearing the end of their time in the spotlight.
